South African DJ falls victim to a German word

South African radio DJ and Idols judge (he is basically our equivalent of Randy… only he is smaller and whiter) Gareth Cliff is calling himself a victim after his 2-day suspension last week by SABC station 5FM after he burst out laughing on air following a news clip in which a male victim of crime was heard weeping.

Gareth has taken a virtual page from Britney’s book by also writing on his web site in an attempt to defend himself.

In short, he blames German. But the Germans needn’t be upset, because he isn’t blaming the language as a whole. Just one word specifically.

Unfortunately for him, apart from “Heidi Klum,” we happen to know another word or two in Deutsch, and we are going to proceed and call Gareth that right now: “Kartoffelkopf!*”

Additional reading: I’m a victim, says Cliff - News 24.

*We know you are too lazy to look it up, so we’ll just save you the trouble. The word we called Gareth is Potato Head. Okay, so that’s a bit weak, we admit. The only other slur we know, though, is Nazi, but that is too harsh an insult to bestow on someone, even for us.

Shirley says:

All that little rant indicates is that Gareth watches too much Boston Legal.

That aside, I was listening in on that morning and the sound clip was absolutely devestating. More so than that, the fact that anyone felt the need to further disparage a person who had clearly already lost so much was in itself upsetting.

Gareth had mocked those tearful “hysterics” in the clip, dismissed them as melodramatic and repeated it again, after a lady had called in and trequested he not do so. It’s easier to trivialise the suffering of that man as communicated in his “hysterics” than to sympathise when on national radio and wanting to gain some infamy.
